Read Africa: Half of A Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a critically acclaimed author who has been very successful in attracting a new generation of readers to African culture. Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (published in 2003), received worldwide praise as well as several awards. Her second novel Half of a Yellow Sun is one the most revered contemporary pieces of literature to emerge from West Africa in recent years. The novel is set in Nigeria in the late 1960s and early 1970s during the Nigerian-Biafrian War. It tells the story of a young revolutionary couple who live through the trials and tribulations of the civil war. Adichie uses the lives of the characters to illustrate the difference between theory and practicality. Though the main characters were revolutionaries that encouraged a change in the political system at that time, they found themselves questioning their initial ideal and passion in regards to the war when they become directly affected. In this novel, Adichie weaves an intricate storyline in which topics such as love trust and loyalty are juxtaposed in a way that causes the reader to question values that they may believe are intrinsic. She explores the fragility of relationships and the impact that change can have. This Novel is a great read and offers interesting insight on an important historical event in Nigerian history.
